WHAT IS A HYBRID FUEL SAVER FOR C&I APPLICATIONS

A hybrid is formed when two kinds of components that produce the same or similar results are combined. A photovoltaic diesel hybrid system, or PV-diesel hybrid system sees the combination of a PV system and diesel genset with an intelligent management system that matches the different power sources to the demand. The PV system complements the diesel gensets and therefore reduces its fuel consumption by supplying solar energy. Because solar power is usually significantly cheaper than diesel fuel, hybrid systems generate very attractive pay-backs.

CHALLENGES OF DIESEL GENSETS FOR C&I APPLICATIONS

In the past, diesel-powered generators were the standard option for off-grid electrification. However, their high maintenance and life-cycle costs (due to their fuel consumption), high carbon emissions, critical fuel availability and diesel theft have motivated many companies to strive for a more sustainable and reliable solution.

Hybrid fuel savers are designed to incorporate solar power generation with a conventional diesel generator addressing the challenges of fuel flexibility, reliability, emissions reductions, efficiency, scale, and budget.

A hybrid fuel saver not only reduces the fuel bill, but also the maintenance costs, as the diesel generator only operates when needed, providing a viable least-cost supply option.

C&I SOLUTIONS

Remote and off-grid locations in need of sustainable and reliable electricity do well to introduce a hybrid fuel saver system to compliment their existing diesel gensets if they find the following:

The source of power of the C&I system is in the container, where the 'brain' of the system is installed.

Remote monitoring and control of the solar system for security, system management and maintenance come standard and provide visibility of the installation no matter where it is.

Rugged and insulated shipping containers allow for safe packaging of batteries, solar equipment and the power electronics, for maximized mobility, protection and durability of the turn key solar generator.

Galvanized steel and aluminum mounting structures on the roof of the container are complemented by ground mounted solar arrays using conventional concrete foundations, piling, ground screws or flexible ballasting depending on ground conditions and project specifications.

CASE STUDY: SOUTH SUDAN

SustainSolar designed, delivered, and installed a turn key SUSTAIN EXTENDED™ for Eye Radio, a leading radio station in South Sudan’s capital Juba.

Where previously it was solely dependent on old, noisy, uneconomical diesel generators as its primary power supply, now these are only being used as backup.

PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS

Sustainable Power Generation from Cape Town, South Africa, built and delivered its pre-installed, temperature controlled, rugged SustainSolar 20-foot container, equipped with SMA solar and battery inverters and BYD batteries.

With the significantly reduced running time of the diesel gensets, the fuel savings alone will lead to a speedy payback of the hybrid-storage system.

This also serves as proof of concept that solar and battery systems not only offer a sustainable renewable energy solution, but also make financial sense for most diesel powered off-grid operations that are so frequently found across Africa, and elsewhere
